This story depicts a boy’s journey to New York to see his father, who is working in New York. Through this story, I just want to say about Haiti and the victims (the boy, his father and mother).The boy is one of the victims. He starts his journey from Haiti after partially recovered from the shock of that incident. Basically, it seems like a normal journey, but there is a parallel journey to orphan hood. He lost his mother in the earthquake. At the end of his journey he also loses his father, and he is adopted by some humanitarian organization.
Story dissection
There are two flashbacks. The last one tells us about Haiti. The boy is haunted with lot of dangerous situations (tremors and the car accident) throughout his journey till he admitted to hospital with minor injury. All tremors and the accident that happened are the symbolic incidents of earthquake. After every tremor the boy becomes upset because of the impact that he had.
Once the boy’s father knew that his wife and kid trapped in that earthquake, he was collapsed and admitted to the hospital for a serious cardiac arrest. That’s why the boy was not picked up by his father at the airport.
When his consciousness came back, he looked around for his mother, but nobody was there to hear his cries except for the doctors and nurses. This sentence states that his mother died.

The Airplane flew over the mountainous land - According to Haitian Creole language, Haiti is pronounced as Ayiti means land of Mountains.
They are celebrating independence on January 1st - in the fourth paragraph.
The time was 4.53 PM (earthquake occurred at this local time) - in the fifth paragraph.
But he didn’t know that his father, who had collapsed after that shocking incident of January 12, 2010, had been admitted in the same hospital for a serious cardiac arrest – in the fifth paragraph.
Symbolic descriptions regarding earthquake - All at once, a sound hovered outside and overhead. He saw that the world on the table moved from the axis and fell down to the ground. Then he could only hear the sounds of destruction and cries of his classmates for help”.
“He saw that the world on the table moved from the axis and fell down to the ground “– it has two symbolic meanings. 1. Because of the earth quake, globe (world) on the table fall down to ground.2. The (globe) world on the table moved from the axis means that the news of the earth quake shook the whole world.
